Sport is an integral part of the educational activities of The Hutchins School. In the Junior School participation in House and Representative sport is highly regarded and provides an opportunity for boys to develop essential lifelong skills, such as; teamwork, dedication and fair play.

Boys participate in House carnivals for Swimming, Cross Country and Athletics, with opportunities to represent the school in interschool competitions with the Junior Southern Sports Association of Tasmanian Independent Schools [JSSATIS].

In the Junior School, sport lessons are time-tabled and conducted during the school time. During terms one and four boys participate in Summer sports and Winter sports during terms two and three.

Summer sports offered in the Junior School include cricket, tennis, T-ball, bushwalking, triathlon, as well as touch rugby for Years 5 and 6 and an introduction to rowing for Year 6.

In winter, options include Australian Rules football, hockey, half-field hockey, soccer, cross country, water polo, table tennis and basketball. A boy will only be excused from a sport period if his Class Teacher receives a note requesting that he not take part and giving a reason for this.

It is compulsory for boys in Years 5 and 6 to represent the School in a rostered competition during the year.
